~ Omar and Ruth ~

Notes from the field…
I met Ruth and Omar early this morning. They are both widows, Ruth lost her husband of 40 years to a sudden heart attack and Omar lost his wife of 35 years. They met at a Kmart in Clarksbury, West Virginia, Omar was home for a school reunion and stopped to do some shopping. Ruth was in town visiting her family when Omar walked up to her and they began to chat. He later asked her for her phone number and now they have been married for 17 years. About 7 years ago Omar had a sudden stroke, forcing him into a wheelchair. About 3 years ago, due to complications with diabetes, his left leg was amputated. Ruth was diagnosed with breat cancer 3 years ago and had to undergo surgery to remove her left breat. They stay together in Omar’s son’s home, Ruth takes care of him and herself. Omar was once a fit and energetic man, he said to me, “I wish I had met you before all this, I was really a bunch of fun.” After only meeting them for an hour, I must admit, I had a bunch of fun, they are a warm and kind couple willing to let me into their everyday.
